San Diego Minimum Wage

Lately the subject of minimum wage has been a matter of a lot of controversy, in general, but recent events in San Diego take the cake. A timeline of this controversy is as follows:

  • The San Diego City Council approved a minimum wage hike to $11.50 an hour by January 1, 2017
  • San Diego’s mayor vetoed the Council’s minimum wage hike
  • The City Council voted to override the mayor’s veto of their minimum wage hike
  • City Council members on vacation voted by telephone and a Republican council Member rushed back from a fishing trip and appeared in a tee-shirt
  • Opponents of San Diego’s minimum wage hike have 30 days to gather 34,000 signatures to qualify the measure for the next municipal election on January 1, 2016

Until the next round of action on this measure, the council measure stands and has San Diego minimum wage increasing as follows:

  • $9.75 on January 1, 2015
  • $10.50 January 1, 2016
  • $11.50 an hour on January 1, 2017
